MCP server
An MCP server is a program that exposes data sources, tools or workflows to AI applications through the Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is described by its maintainers as an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. They compare it to a USB-C port: one standard way to plug AI applications into the things they need.
Through MCP, an AI application such as an assistant can connect to data sources like local files or databases, to tools like search engines or calculators, and to workflows such as specialised prompts. A server is the side that offers those things, and the AI application is the client that uses them.
For agents, this means a tool built once as an MCP server can be used by many different AI applications. Some builders publish servers as products, which is why MCP shows up when people ask how agent businesses work. A server existing says nothing about whether it earns.
What it is not
An MCP server is not an AI agent itself and not a payment system. It is a connector that makes data or tools available. It is also not evidence of income: many servers are free and unpaid.

Questions people ask
What is an MCP server?
It is a program that offers data, tools or workflows to AI applications using the Model Context Protocol.
What does MCP stand for?
Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.
Is an MCP server the same as an AI agent?
No. A server provides capabilities. An agent is the software that decides what to do and may use servers to do it.
Do MCP servers earn money?
Some builders charge for theirs, but many are free. We only report income when there is evidence, and we label how sure we are.
